Inflammation is your body’s defensive response to certain types of aggression, which can be physical, chemical or biological (infections). It tries to remove the initial cause of the injury and repair the damage that occurred during the process. Its main signs are: heat, flushing, swelling, pain and functional inability. The increase in size or swelling (tumour) is produced by the accumulation of fluid and cells at the site of injury, while the pain is produced by the stimulus on the nerve endings in the area. About 20% of the Spanish adult population suffers from chronic pain, which means approximately 6.5 million people suffering pain on a continuous basis, women being those who suffer the most. It is both muscular and bone pain in general and in the back in particular (lumbar and cervical); also headaches (12%), digestive problems (5%) and gynaecological pain (4%).
