Vitamin C contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system
After respiratory infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common. Ninety percent of cases are cystitis (bladder infections), affecting mostly young women. They are almost always bacterial infections, with Escherichia coli (E. coli) being the most common bacteria. UTIs often become recurrent, meaning more than three episodes per year.
The good news is that recurrent UTIs can be prevented! How? Following certain hygiene and dietary guidelines: drink plenty of water, urinate frequently, urinate after sexual intercourse, clean the intimate area from front to back, avoid standing in a wet swimsuit, wear cotton underwear, shower rather than bathe, wash the urogenital area only with water or with special intimate soaps…
D-Mannose is a monosaccharide with antiseptic activity in the urinary tract. It is able to bind to the surface of E. coli, thus preventing the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. Since it cannot adhere to the wall, it cannot receive nutrients, slowing its growth and proliferation. It remains free in the bladder urine, to be eliminated with urination.
Cranberry is a berry widely studied for its ability to prevent urinary tract infections. It is rich in proanthocyanidins (PACs), an active ingredient that has the same mechanism of action as D-mannose, preventing E. coli from attaching to the bladder wall.
If D-mannose and cranberry are used together, they are even more effective, as they are able to disable a greater number of bacterial adhesion sites in the bladder, as they bind to different areas of the E. coli surface: to the type I and P fimbriae, respectively.
In 2017, the Spanish Society of Urology published a multidisciplinary guideline on “Uncomplicated Cystitis in Women.” It highlights the use of D-mannose and cranberry as effective and safe ingredients for recurrent UTIs when used continuously.
The leaves of the bearberry plant have traditionally been used as an antiseptic for the urinary tract and to aid diuresis.
Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system and protects cells from oxidative damage. A strong immune system will better protect us against infectious agents.
