Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a very common problem.
IBS is the most common gastrointestinal functional disorder. It can occur at any age and is more frequent in women. Its clinical course alternates symptomatic periods and symptom-free periods and causes a lot of negative impact on the quality of life.
Experts say that IBS is a multifactorial syndrome that occurs with alterations in the intestine. Among the most important factors are: altered mood (depression), stress or anxiety, having suffered gastrointestinal infections or following a poor diet.
Scientific studies show that IBS alters gut flora (dysbiosis), accompanied by low-grade chronic intestinal inflammation and increased intestinal permeability; which causes the appearance of the typical symptoms of IBS.
Abdominal pain, the main symptom, is usually colicky and variable in its location. There are alterations in bowel movements: diarrhoea, constipation or alternation of both and excess gas formation that causes abdominal distension. There may also be other symptoms.
